Just ordered a brand new set of General Altimax Arctic 205/70/R15's for the Rally Car! Definitely the most popular tire in our RallyX Region.
Stock General Tire photo, not my wheels or size (obviously)
I’m excited to get them mounted up so that the Capri is ready for some wintery madness. 1 step closer to the first actual rally event!
Brand new set of snow tires (in December) for 245.71. Great coupon and deal on Tirebuyer.com - coupon code is RMN8 for 8% off!

Interesting - Firestone Winterforce is the hot choice in New England, since the tread more closely resembles a gravel rally tire. Maybe our dirt is different?
Either tire is a great choice, though.

Hmm, ‘round here the budget favorite are Firestone Winterforce. I’ve run Altimax Arctics on my last few cars, the only one that I really liked them on was my Subaru. I haven’t been impressed with them in FWD applications.

I actually had those snows on my 325xi wagon before I updated it to an ‘03 that came with some Michelin snows. Anyway my only complaint was road noise, which is a) nearly all snow tires and b) not an issue because Rally Car. Good tires! They also work fine at 100mph on the highway. Don’t ask me how I know.

There have been a LOT of direct comparison and opinions thrown out on Winterforce vs Arctics in our region. The polls side with the Arctic out here and with it being my first tire for the Capri I figured I’d go with the popular vote lol.
It’s all going to change in the future for me. I plan on swapping to a bigger rear end, 5 lug and rear disc brakes. At that point I’d like to get (probably over time) 3 sets of wheels for the car. 1 set for street tires to go to and from events, 1 set of winter tires on it, and 1 set with All Terrains. I can get A/T’s that fit the car without modifying the body at all and they’ll be used on crazy super muddy days. The winters will be for all other non super mud events.

Good thing they’re going on RWD then!
And there’s a huge debate between winterforce and Arctic’s, i took the popular vote from my region’s RallyX guys, including a guy who’s run them on a Mustang equivalent of my Capri.

Hahahaha, and yeah I have no concerns about road noise. I don’t even really want to drive to the course in them just to preserve them for racing!
Good to know they may work at high speeds lol

Are you going to add studs to them, because rally car?

Studs are illegal in SCCA RallyX. They’ve opened up the discussion about it this winter but I think they’ll stay illegal.
I’ve heard at these levels they can have some negative impacts on the driveline as well btw.

They never used to.... I have noted the increase lately. Bummer. My next set’s probably going to be Nokian. I’ve heard good things, and one of the guys that runs the local ice racing events works for a local Nokian vendor.

I’ve heard great things about the Nokians.
These Generals came out to just over 60 a tire. It was a crazy deal. Firestones were just under 80. I moved a size on mine just to get the crazy price. Maybe they have trouble selling my size? I don’t know. Great deal though, especially with budget being one of the biggest concerns for my Rally Project.

Was considering them last time but ended up with ExtremeWinterContacts. Might actually try them this time if price is good.

My brother in law recently bought new snows he went with the Michelins because they are next in ratings to the Nokians and 15 bucks a tire cheaper, plus. he got a 70 dollar rebate on them too. 130 dollar difference pretty much makes the decision for you.

I actually did take my former 325xi wagon on an open course at Team O’Neil’s for a bit of a hot lap. It aired nicely at the top of the lower skidpad/slalom loop they have setup there. The tires? I had no comparison, so... they worked.

Those remind me of Mini’s 5 Star twin spoke wheels.

Snow tires are to rallycross as 200 wear tires are to autocross. Snow tires provide much better grip on gravel than standard road tires due to their more aggressive tread (and at rallycross speeds the softer compound helps though snows will not hold up in a stage environment) but don’t bump you up a class like proper gravel tires would. In a gravel environment you are not getting an advantage from studs and are likely to end up ripping them out of the tire. I personally agree with banning them for use at non snowy events however I am open to allowing them at snow events with the caveat that they would be treated like gravel tires and bump you out of your class.

I’m thinking of ordering a set of street Altimaxes for my Dakota.

I just assumed snow tires were being used for snow rallies.
